To do this:
1) From the Main Menu, go to the Game Settings screen
2) Choose the Interface tab
3) Under Network Adapter Options, select the particular Adapter you want to use from the list

C) Trouble Hosting Games (e.g., Behind a Firewall)
--------------------------------------------------
If you receive a message that you cannot host a game, there are 2
reasons this might happen:
1) you are behind a firewall or
2) your Internet address may be obscured because your LAN or ISP is translating your Internet (IP) address.

If you are behind a firewall you can host games as long as the firewall does not obscure your computer's internet address (IP address). Certain firewalls require that specific UDP and TCP ports be open in order to play to Empire Earth: Art of Conquest games on Sierra.com or directly via IP address. These ports are:

UDP Port: 33334
TCP Port: 33335

Refer to your firewall's documentation if you aren't sure how to open ports or see your Network Administrator if you are behind a company's firewall.

If your LAN or ISP is translating your network address: With the growing number of users on the Internet, some ISPs (especially DSL providers) have begun to utilize network address translation (also called NAT) to dynamically allocate their limited number of IP addresses. We are investigating various means of allowing players behind a NAT to host games, but there is no solution at this time. You should still be able to join games hosted by someone else or host a game yourself by giving other players your IP address so that they can connect to your game directly (i.e., Join By IP).

D) Supported Video Cards*
------------------------
Empire Earth: Art of Conquest supports video cards based on the
following 3D chipsets:

nVidia Riva128 (excluding 4MB PCI)
nVidia TNT
nVidia TNT2
nVidia GeForce 256
nVidia GeForce2
nVidia GeForce3
3dfx Voodoo3
3dfx Voodoo4
3dfx Voodoo5
S3 Savage 4
S3 Savage 2000
Matrox G200
Matrox G400
Matrox G450
ATI Rage Pro (excluding 4MB PCI)
ATI Rage 128
ATI Rage Fury MAXX
ATI Radeon
PowerVR Kyro II
PowerVR Kyro Series3
Savage 3D (only with the Beta 6.13.28 drivers, available at http://www.s3graphics.com/)

To ensure that Empire Earth: Art of Conquest runs properly, make sure you have the most up to date drivers for your video card installed on your computer. Drivers are usually available for download from the video card manufacturer's web site.

Empire Earth: Art of Conquest also requires DirectX 8.0a or above to run. DirectX 8.1 can be found on the Empire Earth: Art of Conquest CD, and is available for download at Microsoft's website.http://www.microsoft.com/directx/

* Some chipsets did not yet have drivers available for Windows XP at the time this Readme was written. The Savage3D and Riva 128 cards do not allow Empire Earth: Art of Conquest to run in Windows XP.

E) Modem Disconnects During/After Games
---------------------------------------
Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) periodically drop connections that seem to be inactive in order to save bandwidth. If you are playing multiplayer games of Empire Earth: Art of Conquest over a dial-up modem and you are experiencing occasional disconnects, you can try the following to prevent that from happening (this is not recommended for users with minimum systems):
1. Get and install an instant messaging program such as ICQ (from ICQ Inc.) or AIM (from AOL), or get a "keep alive" program such as Keep it Alive. Programs such as these are readily available for download from various web sites.
2. Before you play a multiplayer game of Empire Earth: Art of Conquest, run the instant messaging or "keep alive" program. Have it running in the background during your game (we recommend closing all other programs). This should keep your Internet connection active.

F) Specific Issues with Windows XP
----------------------------------
On some video cards, the following problems were noted when playing under the Windows XP Operating System:
- AutoSaves can take up to 1 minute
- Empire Earth: Art of Conquest may pause for long periods of time but does not state it is AutoSaving
- After a save is complete, up to 20 seconds may elapse before any actions register
- Play may seem a little choppy

Note that the AutoSave feature can be turned off in Empire Earth: Art of Conquest Game Settings (Interface tab).

The following video cards won't allow Empire Earth: Art of Conquest to run in Windows XP:
- Savage3D
- Riva 128

The ATI Rage Pro and the Matrox G200 both exhibited minor graphical problems, but were able to play the game fine. Additionally, some chipsets did not yet have video drivers available for Windows XP at the time this Readme was written.

G) Mouse Seems to Lag or Feels Sluggish
---------------------------------------
If your mouse pointer seems sluggish or slow to respond to movement of the mouse, go to the Game Settings, Video tab, and make sure the Vertical Sync (VSync) option is turned ON (i.e., the box is checked). Having Vertical Sync ON should alleviate the problem.

H) Graphic Problems when Pressing Alt-Tab
-----------------------------------------
On some computer systems, users might experience graphics problems using Alt-Tab while playing Empire Earth: Art of Conquest. To correct such problems during a game, try the following:
1) Zoom all the way in using the mouse wheel or bracket key.
2) Press Alt-Tab to go out of the game. Then use Alt-Tab to re-enter the game. This often fixes the problem.

I) Patching Empire Earth
------------------------
Empire Earth: Art of Conquest does NOT require that you have the latest version of Empire Earth to run.

However, in order to play online with the original game, you will need to have the latest version of Empire Earth. Patches and updates can be found at

http://www.sierra.com/support/updates.php

J) Known Issues Relating to Sound
---------------------------------
If the Windows "sound scheme" is changed while playing the game (via alt-Tabbing out to Windows), on return to the game there will be no sounds. Do not change Windows sound schemes while playing Empire Earth: The Age of Conquest.

If your machine has no sound card, or the sound card driver is missing or disabled, Empire Earth: The Age of Conquest will not run. You should see an error message describing this problem.

K) Known Issues with Specific Graphics Cards
--------------------------------------------
Depending on your video card and other hardware factors, Empire Earth: The Art of Conquest can exhibit sluggish graphics performance. Try reducing the game's resolution (e.g., 800x600, 1024x768, etc.) and color depth (from 32-bit to 16-bit) via the Game Settings screen.

Also, some laptops and desktop machines use a portion of system memory for video memory, instead of specifically dedicated video memory. Besides having potential performance problems, this reduces the available system memory for the game. A 64 MB machine with 8 MB of system memory devoted to video has only 56 MB devoted to the operating system, and is thus below the minimum specification for Empire Earth: The Age of Conquest. This may result in poor performance or an inability to run the game.

More specific known issues are listed below:

1)ATI Rage Pro: Several problems related to transparency and color blending may be exhibited, including fog-of-war space tiles appearing grey instead of black, poor terrain blending, cloudy transparencies when buildings or units become partially transparent, and jagged land-sea borders. There is currently no workaround for these problems.

2)Matrox G450:
 - Game play may be choppy at 1024x768 or higher in 32-bits. Reduce resolution and/or color depth in the Game Settings screen.
 - Game may hang if desktop resolution is set to 1024x768. Change the desktop resolution to any other setting.

3)Number Nine Savage:
 - The cursor may lose transparency in 32-bit modes. Use the Game Settings screen to change to a 16-bit graphics mode.
 - The game may crash to desktop if a resolution higher than 1024x768 is used; reduce game resolution to 1024x768.
 - The game may not run in 32-bit mode if the desktop is set to a 32-bit mode. Change the color depth of the desktop to 16-bit.
 - The unit statistics box may have unintended flashing lines around it. Try changing game resolution or color settings.

4)TNT2 32 MB: May experience system lockup if run with desktop resolution set to 640x480. Set the desktop resolution to 800x600 or higher before running game.

5)Voodoo 3 2000 16 MB AGP: Graphics may become garbled at 1600x1200 resolution if desktop is set to 1024x768 32-bit color. Use game resolutions below 1600x1200.

6) Voodoo 5500: In Windows 9x or Me, the graphics can become corrupted in 32 bit color mode (e.g., 800 x 600 x 32 bit). To fix the problem, select a 16 bit color mode.

7)LCD Screens: LCD screens can feature ghost images (e.g. images from previous screens may appear after the screen has been closed). This is a general behavior of all LCD screens.

8)ATI Radeon 8500:
-In Windows 98 and ME, the game may crash if the desktop resolution is set to 640x480. Increase the desktop resolution.
-Changing the "Video Card" or "3D Acceleration" settings in the Game Settings menu may cause a crash. Leave the Video Card set to 'Primary' and the 3D Acceleration set to 'Direct 3D' (NOT 'Direct 3D Hardware TnL')

III. GENERAL GAME ISSUES (Including updated game play information)
------------------------------------------------------------------
A) Difficulty Settings
B) Illegal Characters in Sierra.com User Names
C) Space Maps
D) List of Civilization Powers and How to Use Them
E) Civilization and Unit Updates
F) New Hotkeys
G) Updated Empire Earth hotkey information
H) New unit Hit Points and Attack Values
I) Issues with the Scenario Editor

A) Difficulty Settings
----------------------
The difficulty settings affect the Random Map AIs, Multiplayer AIs, and Single Player Scenario AIs. When set to Hard the AI attacks more frequently, more aggressively, and does more damage (150%). When set to Easy the AI attacks less frequently, less aggressively, and does less damage (66%).

You may set the difficulty in the Random Map Settings screen, on each Single Player Campaign screen, and in the Game Settings of the Multiplayer Lobby. The setting will be the same for all the AIs in the game, and changing the setting in one area will be reflected in the other areas.

Note that though the Play Saved Game screen and the Play Scenario screen do not have a difficulty settings option, the games played will use the current difficulty setting.

When creating and saving a new scenario, the scenario is automatically saved with a default level-of-difficulty setting based on the last setting used when playing a single player random map game (this includes Deathmatch, which is a Resource option). In other words, if you played a single player, random map game against the computer and set the Difficulty to Easy, then your scenario is saved as 'Easy'. (Note that this does not necessarily mean the scenario is actually easy, just that the Difficulty Setting is 'Easy'.) This Difficulty Setting is permanent for your scenario and there is no way for end-users to check a scenario to find out what Difficulty Setting it has. There is also no way to change the Difficulty Setting of the scenario later, for example by re-saving it.

To ensure a new scenario is saved with the Difficulty Setting you want:
1) Start a single player, random map game against the computer and set the Difficulty to the level you want
2) Quit the single player game
3) Start the Scenario Editor and begin creating your new scenario, then save the scenario.

B) Illegal Characters in Sierra.com User Names
----------------------------------------------
User names on Sierra.com are not permitted to include the following characters:
" ' @ \ ` | ? % . /

c) New Space Maps
-----------------
It is highly recommended that all games which include the use of space ships be played on Medium or bigger maps. Tiny and Small maps are playable, but their limited sizes are not conducive to good gameplay with the new Space ship units.

Tiny to Large "Planets-Small" maps can occasionally make odd-shaped or single-tile neutral planets. This does not adversely affect the balance of the gameplay, but it does make for strange looking maps. This was also a rare occurance on the original Small Islands maps.

Planets-Satellite maps are referred to as Tournament Planets in the .rmv files.

D) Unique Civilization Powers
-----------------------------
Each civilization has been given a unique power or unit it can build.

Flaming Arrows (Ancient Greece)
Epochs: 3-7.
Description: Simple, Composite, and Long bowmen can attack wooden buildings with flaming arrows. Each arrow has a chance of setting the building on fire. Once burning, the building will continue to take damage until the fire goes out. In addition, there is a chance that the fire will spread to adjacent buildings.

Priest Tower (Babylon)
Epochs: All
Description: A player who has selected this power may build a tower that converts enemy units within its range. The Priest Tower's Hit Points and Range are upgraded when Wall/Tower upgrades are researched by the player. The tower will automatically convert one unit at a time within its range, or may be selected and the player can specify specific targets. The University will prevent conversion from Priest Towers.

Slavery (Assyrian Empire)
Epochs: All
Description: When enemy citizens die, a citizen is created at the player's capitol, provided he is under the population cap. As the game progresses, the number of citizens that need to be killed to produce a new citizen increases.

Insurance (Byzantine Rome)
Epochs: All
Description: When any unit is killed or building is destroyed, a percentage of the resources used in their construction is returned to the player.

Pathfinding (Carthage)
Epochs: All.
Description: Allows all units produced at barracks, archery range (except chariot archer, elephant archer, and cavalry archer), and citizens, to walk over cliffs and through trees.

Emissaries (Kingdom of Israel)
Epochs: All.
Description: All this civilization's priests are cloaked.

Adaptation (Austria)
Epochs: 3 - 15.
Description: Austria can steal advances from other civilizations. When an enemy settlement or town center is converted by Austrian priests, the civilization gets one of the opponent's advances at random. Unique powers will be chosen first, and advances that the Austrians don't have will be chosen second. If a town center is converted it will change ownership but revert to a settlement. Adaptation priests can convert town centers and settlements beginning in Epoch 3.

Exploration (England)
Epochs: 6-10.
Description: Each Capital or Town Center constructed will reveal a large area of the map around it.

Crusaders (Franks)
Epochs: 4-7.
Description: A player who has selected this power can train Short Swordsmen, Long Swordsmen, Bronze Cavalry, and Knights that have the ability, like priests, to convert units.

Metallurgy (Kingdom of Italy)
Epochs: All.
Description: Metallurgy allows the player with this power to pay all costs with gold or iron interchangeably. If the proper resource is exhausted, the alternate will be used until it is also exhausted.

Expansionist (Ottoman Empire)
Epochs: All.
Description: The player's citizens build Town Centers instead of Settlements from the start.

Conquistadors (Spain)
Epochs: 7-9
Description: Cuirassier, Imperial Cuirassier, Carabineer and Dragoon have greatly increased line of sight, and a special power which allows them to temporarily increase it even further.

Camouflage (France)
Epochs: All.
Description: Archers, Ranged Infantry, Tanks, Field Cannons, and Siege weapons can cloak once they have been idle for 10 seconds. If they resume movement or attack they will become visible after a brief time.

Bundeswehr (Germany)
Epochs: 9-12.
Description: Citizens can instantly be converted to Partisans at a cost.

SAS Commando (Great Britain)
Epochs: 10-15.
Description: Great Britain's barracks can construct this special military unit. The SAS Commando can attack like a normal marine, but can also swim through water and can plant explosive charges on a building, which then automatically detonate and do significant damage.

Paratroopers (Italy)
Epochs: 11-15.
Description: Italy's airports can build the Paratrooper Transport plane. Once the plane is built, and the Paratrooper Rally location is specified, the plane takes off and drops off 8 ranged infantry at the rally flag. If the plane is destroyed paratroopers are destroyed. If the plane runs out if fuel it drops the troopers immediately.

Advanced Mining (Russia)
Epochs: All.
Description: Russia can assign up to 7 citizens to mining stone, gold and iron, and gathering from forage patches.

Market (United States)
Epochs: 10-15.
Description: The United States can build a Market which allows the player to exchange one resource for another. Four buttons allow you to sell Food, Iron, Stone and Wood. All resourced sold are converted to Gold. Four more buttons allow you to buy Food, Iron, Stone and Wood. All resources purchased cost a specific amount of Gold, which is removed from the player's Gold reserves. Each transaction will cost a small amount of extra gold, and as the amount of resource purchased or sold increases, the cost increases.

Just In Time Manufacturing(China)
Epochs: All.
Description: China can build units instantly for additional cost. Each unit producing building has a toggle button. When JIT is toggled "on" the build queue at that building is cleared and any units selected are instantly produced at extra cost. If the button is toggled "off", or another building is selected, production resumes as normal. (Note that clicking on a building which is already selected will also have the effect of turning off Just-In-Time for that building).

Missile Base(Novaya Russia)
Epochs: 13-15.
Description: Novaya Russia's Citizens can construct missile bases. These bases can construct Nuclear Missiles, which can travel across land, sea and space to attack a target. Anti Missile Batteries are the only units that can destroy a Nuclear Missile.

Cloaking (Rebel Forces)
Epochs: All.
Description: Rebel Forces' Capitols have the special power that it may totally cloak areas of its town. Capital buildings have mana based ability that cloaks all units in an area of effect. If a group of Capitols share an area of effect, and one of them cloaks, any Capitols in the group that have enough power will also cloak.

Fanaticism (Korea)
Epochs: All.
Description: All foot soldiers of Korea have the ability to become "fanatic." These inconsistencies most often occur by following these steps:
1) Build a Civilization in the Civilization Editor
2) Assign it to a player in the Scenario Editor
3) Test the scenario directly from the Scenario Editor

This process can lead to unpredictable results. The Civilization bonuses and Technologies enabled in editor may not show up, or an incorrect set may be available. For best results save the scenario and run it via the Single Player -> Play Scenario menu ingame.

This problem may also manifest as incorrect technologies on Space or Land maps. Creating a Space map in the Scenario Editor, then testing it, you may see Naval Dock/Hurricane techs available instead of Space Dock/Meteor storm, for example.

Finally, units with Mana placed down in the editor sometimes show full power when tested, but in fact they must charge up before they can use their special power (eg Priest Tower).

IV.
